What is MentorU? MentorU leverages the proven power of one-to-one mentoring to keep students on track to graduate and prepare for life after high school. MentorU also provides screened and trained volunteer mentors with diverse life experiences for students enrolled in an academic enrichment class at local high schools. Through mentoring, students develop life and social skills, explore career interests, and engage with active and retired professionals. How does MentorU work? MentorU pairs students with mentors based on shared career and personal interests, backgrounds, and life experiences. Using an online portal, students and mentors exchange text messages every week, and once per month, mentors visit the classroom to meet with their student in person*. Dialogues explore topics like goal setting, perseverance, self-advocacy, communication, vulnerability, and college and career readiness. Dedicated staff providing training, lessons, and ongoing support to develop and sustain successful, meaningful relationships. What is the time commitment for mentors? Volunteers are expected to serve as mentors for at least one school year. Weekly message exchanges take 30-45 minutes and can be completed on your own schedule. Classroom visits – in person or virtual – are up to 45 minutes plus travel time. Which schools host the MentorU program? For the 2021-2022 school year, MentorU is being delivered at Shadle Park High School, and North Central High School in Spokane, WA.
